The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
