A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
